6.153

往昔曾結別教緣者，中間同事說法，種種教詔，成熟未熟。佛今在分段作佛。未得道者。當處即有業生；上界向下，得有願通。橫從他方，得有願通。竪從方便來，亦有願通。竪從實報來者，得有應生，無明先破，已得法身之本，能起應入生死。此則異前（云云）。

For those who formed connections through the distinctive teaching in the past, in the interim they engaged in common tasks, preached the Dharma, and used various instructions to ripen those not yet ripened. The Buddha now appears as a buddha in fragmented [birth and death]. For those who have not attained the Way, there is retributive birth right in this place; descending from the higher realms, there can be volitional and supernormal [births]. Horizontally from other regions, there can be volitional and supernormal [births]. Vertically coming from [the land of] expedients, there are also volitional and supernormal [births]. For those coming vertically from [the land of] true reward, there can be responsive birth: ignorance having been broken beforehand and the root of the dharma-kāya having already been attained, they are able to give rise to a response and enter birth and death. This is different from the previous [teachings] (and so on).
