Fifth, explaining the wonderfulness of the original spiritual powers: The sūtra states: 'The Tathāgata's secret power of spiritual penetrations,' and further: 'Or manifesting his own body or another's body, manifesting his own affairs or another's affairs.' Manifesting his own body and own affairs is the perfect spiritual power; manifesting another's body and another's affairs is the biased spiritual power. 'Secret' means wonderful; whether biased or perfect, both are wonderful. This points to the spiritual powers of the original time, not the spiritual powers of the traces. Trace spiritual powers are of many kinds: Some say that relying on the liberations and the eradicating bases, through the fourteen transformations one obtains the six spiritual powers, surpassing non-Buddhists and excelling the two vehicles; this is the spiritual power of the Tripiṭaka Buddha. Some say that relying on the undefiled wisdom that embodies dharmas one obtains the six spiritual powers, excelling those relying on the liberations; this is the divine power of the shared Buddha. Some say that bundling the former six spiritual powers into five, relying on the Middle Way one gives rise to the undefiled spiritual power; these six are the spiritual powers of the distinctive Buddha. Some say that the neutral transformative dhyāna of the Middle Way possesses all the transformations of the six spiritual powers, not arising from the concentration of cessation yet manifesting all dignified deportments, speech and silence not obstructing each other, movement and quiescence having no dual principle—further, as in the present sūtra, the six omens, transforming the lands, and so forth are all the spiritual powers of the perfect Buddha.
