9.158

開迹顯本者，此亦就法，亦就理。秖文殊所述，然燈佛及久遠來，讚示涅槃道，及分身諸佛。如此迹說，以是顯本之意，惑者未悟玄旨。今若顯本，亦不逈就餘途，還開近迹示其本要耳。就理者，但深觀方便之迹，本理即顯。文云：「我實成佛已來，久遠若斯，但以方便教化眾生，令入佛道。」若入佛道，即於迹得本也。

'Opening the traces and revealing the original source' likewise concerns dharma and also concerns principle. It is simply that which Mañjuśrī related regarding Dīpaṃkara Buddha, and from long remote past praising and displaying the path of nirvāṇa, as well as the emanation buddhas. Preaching of traces such as this already had the intent of revealing the original source, yet the deluded did not awaken to the profound purport. Now if the original source is revealed, it does not take a completely different path either; it simply reopens the near traces to display their original essential [truth]. Concerning principle: if one merely deeply contemplates the traces of expedients, the original principle is revealed immediately. The text says: 'I truly attained buddhahood long remote like this, but merely through expedients teach and transform sentient beings, causing them to enter the buddha path.' If one enters the buddha path, right within the traces one attains the original source.
