「私記」者，章安尊者於江陵自記大師所說，不與他共，故名為私。「緣起」者，述所記之興致，序教法之所由，此中先序師德及傳述之意，名為總序。次正序玄文，不過五義及本迹奧旨。

As for 'Private Record', the Venerable Zhang'an personally recorded what the Great Master expounded in Jiangling, not sharing it with others; hence it is called 'private'. As for 'Origins', it recounts the purpose of what was recorded and prefaces the source of the teachings. Herein, first prefacing the master's virtues and the intention of transmission is called the general preface. Next, directly prefacing the profound text does not exceed the five meanings and the deep principles of origin and traces.
