Second, in explaining the substance, there are two parts: first, generally explaining the purpose of its introduction; second, opening the chapters to explain it properly. The first passage also has two parts: first, properly explaining the purpose of its introduction; second, from "Substance is" onward, properly explaining the intention behind speaking of substance. The first passage has two parts: first, explaining the purpose of its introduction in contrast with the preceding title; second, explaining the purpose of its introduction in contrast with the succeeding gist and function. In the first part, where it says "speaking generally," the title encompasses the three below; the three are the specific within the general, and substance is again the specific within the three; not yet having touched upon all the diverse meanings, within the sudden dotting of the three tracks, substance belongs to true nature. Next, from "true nature" onward, in contrast with gist and function, it can be understood. Next, in explaining the intention behind speaking of substance, there are four parts: first, praising it in terms of the text; second, from "not only" onward, praising it in terms of practice and understanding; third, from "The text says" onward, citing two passages to prove it is unspeakable; fourth, from "It also says" onward, properly explaining that responding to capacities is called causes and conditions. As for the statement "the confluence of all meanings": both the origin and trace doors return to the true mark, and the meanings and purports of an entire lifetime all accord with substance; the rest is as in the text.
