Part 6, "Serving as the substance of the various practices": listing the headings and explaining them. In the first, explaining identity and difference, there are two [parts]: first, generally indicating; next, from "the dull" downward, the characteristics of practice. This also has two [parts]: first, establishing the two practices as having universal meaning; next, directly applying the two practices through the teachings. This also has two [parts]: first, applying them through the four teachings; next, reiterating in terms of the Perfect [Teaching]. First, applying them through the four teachings also has two [parts]: first, clarifying the characteristics of practice; next, concluding the intention of practice—the intention requires mutual reliance. The first also has two [parts]: first, vertical; next, horizontal. "Vertical" means proceeding from the shallow to the deep, all taking the principle as their substance; "horizontal" means cultivating all practices completely at the initial mind, also taking what is expressed by the respective teaching as the substance. Next, reiterating the horizontal and vertical practices of the Perfect [Teaching] also has two [parts]: first, clarifying the horizontal and vertical practices; next, concluding by establishing the substance of the cart. The first also has two [parts]: first, vertical; next, horizontal. Within the horizontal there are two [parts]: first, directly clarifying the horizontal substance; next, from "this text" downward, extensively citing scriptural verifications that [the practices] cannot [alone] be the substance. Existence and non-existence are horizontal; the great cart is the substance. Fundamental habituation is horizontal; being individually one is the substance. The various practices are horizontal; non-arising is the substance. Giving and so forth are horizontal; non-abiding is the substance.
