Regarding "Question: The central theme and function both illuminate wisdom and severance..." and so on: precisely because the preceding text either challenged function with the central theme, or challenged the central theme with function, fearing that the dharmas might be confused, this question was necessary. The central theme is one's own practice, and function is converting others; each has wisdom and severance; are they identical or different? This text directly asks about wisdom and severance in the central theme and function, yet in the answer below, each has wisdom and severance for oneself and for others, because the central theme is one's own practice and function is converting others. Therefore, using the central theme and function to explain the differences in wisdom and severance for oneself and others, their names are each distinct. Since the preceding text took one's own practice as the central theme and converting others as function, now, with oneself and others each having wisdom and severance, it turns out that oneself and others each have a central theme and function. Although the central theme has a function, the function belongs to severance; this is called the function of the central theme. "Wisdom and severance of both oneself and others are both the central theme" means that one's own practice takes the virtue of wisdom as its central theme, and converting others takes the virtue of severance as its central theme. "Wisdom and severance of converting others are both function" means that viewing others from the perspective of oneself, both wisdom and severance are wisdom, and viewing oneself from the perspective of others, both wisdom and severance are severance; the text speaks from the perspective of viewing oneself from the perspective of others, and therefore simply says, "Wisdom and severance of converting others are both function."
