「婆稚」者，此云被縛，或云五處被縛，或云五惡，物繫頸不得脫故云被縛。亦云有縛，為帝釋所縛。本能五繫，繫魔外道，迹為此像耳。《正法華》云「最勝觀」者，以三觀智，縛五住惑，入實際中。

"Bāli", translated here as "bound", or said to be "bound in five places", or said to be "five evils"; because an object binds his neck so that he cannot escape, he is called "bound". It also means "having bonds", because he was bound by Śakra. Originally able with the five bonds to bind māras and non-Buddhists, in his traces he merely assumes this form. The *Zheng fahua* calls him "Supreme Contemplation", meaning that with the wisdom of the threefold contemplation he binds the afflictions of the five entrenchments and enters reality.
