Before explaining "great" (mahā), "together with" (yǔ) was explained by "in common" (gòng). Ānanda was in common with those twelve thousand not merely in terms of persons; he must have been in common with the persons' seven [factors]. Since all among the seven are great, it is called "with the great." Since "with" has four different explanations, the meaning of "great" must logically follow them. Furthermore, the meaning of the previous character "with" encompassed time and so forth; now explaining the character "great," it resides solely in the persons endowed with the seven, and further encompasses "many" and "superior." Furthermore, the explanation of the character "with" encompassed both the active and passive; now explaining the character "great," it resides solely in the passive [object]. This indicates others as great from Ānanda's perspective. Here, citing the text of the Treatise first, in the Pañcaviṃśati it resides in the small, because the mind has not yet turned.
