復次於中先問，有何因緣而說是經？答中云第一義故，乃別指衍門為第一義，因即釋出前之三悉，且指三藏論云，四悉檀攝八萬四千法藏，故今通用，具如《玄》文以開十門。又《淨名》前玄總有十卷，因為晉王著《淨名疏》，別製《略玄》，乃離前玄分為三部，別立題目，謂四教六卷，四悉兩卷，三觀兩卷，彼兩卷中文甚委悉。

Furthermore, within this it first asks: by what causes and conditions was this sūtra spoken? In the answer, it says because of the ultimate truth, specifically pointing to the Mahāyāna portal as the ultimate truth, and thereupon explains the former three siddhāntas. Pointing provisionally to the Tripiṭaka treatises, it says the four siddhāntas subsume the eighty-four thousand dharma treasuries; hence they are now universally applied, fully opening the ten portals as in the text of the Profound Meaning. Furthermore, the earlier Profound Meaning of the Vimalakīrti had ten fascicles in total; because of writing the Commentary on the Vimalakīrti for the Prince of Jin, the Abridged Profound Meaning was specially composed, separating the earlier Profound Meaning into three works and establishing separate titles: namely, four teachings in six fascicles, four siddhāntas in two fascicles, and three contemplations in two fascicles. The text in those two fascicles is very detailed.
