Eighth is the pair of the manifest and the hidden. The first question and answer explains the name of Guanyin, clarifying manifest resonance and hidden response. Manifest resonance means sentient beings arouse resonance through the three karmas; hidden response means Guanyin delivers them without manifesting a body or expounding the Dharma. "Universal Gate" is hidden resonance and manifest response. As for manifest response, he contemplates their minds, manifests bodies, and expounds the Dharma; as for hidden resonance, it does not elucidate sentient beings arousing resonance through the three karmas, but merely states "should be delivered by...", meaning that spiritual capacities and conditions genuinely sprout, and so he immediately manifests bodies and expounds the Dharma for them. However, manifest and hidden resonances and responses fully comprise four propositions, which can be understood through reflection. The first section clarifies the hidden response, and the latter section clarifies the manifest response; although the response sections are many, they do not go beyond the manifest and hidden. The present sūtra precisely clarifies resonance and response; therefore, among the four propositions, it only clarifies these two. It is not only this chapter that clarifies this meaning; it completely subsumes the meaning of response and resonance across all sūtras.
