Fifth is clarifying their opening and combining. Master Long said: 'The first is bodily karma, the next is verbal karma, and the latter two are mental karma.' These are merely broad distinctions. Someone said: 'The first two govern wisdom: the first is wisdom of emptiness, and the next is wisdom of existence; the latter two govern merit: the first is goodness of cessation, and the latter is goodness of action.' What is clarified now may be divided into four pairs: First, the first is understanding, and the latter three are practice. In understanding, both emptiness and existence are present; in practice, there are the two practices of departing and obtaining—the middle two are the practice of departing, and the latter one is the practice of obtaining. Again, the first is wisdom, and within wisdom are wisdom of emptiness and wisdom of existence; the latter three are merit, and within merit are cessation and action—the middle two are cessation, and the latter one is action. Again, the first and the latter one are obtaining, while the middle two are departing. Again, the former three are for one's own practice, while the latter one is for transforming others, and transforming others consists in pulling out suffering and giving joy. Within one's own practice, the first gives rise to understanding, and the latter two extinguish delusion.
