就列聲聞眾為二：初、僧；次、尼。何由先僧後尼者，義有七門：一、男尊女卑，故前僧後尼。二、僧前入道，尼後入道。三、僧為師，尼為弟子。四、僧傳持法藏，故二十五人皆是僧也，尼則不能。五、僧能結集大小二藏，尼則不能。六、僧與佛同住，尼與佛異住。七、僧眾多，尼眾少。

Regarding the listing of the śrāvaka assembly, there are two parts: first, monks; next, nuns. For what reason are monks first and nuns later? In principle there are seven gates: first, men are honored and women are humble, hence monks first and nuns later; second, monks entered the Way earlier, and nuns entered the Way later; third, monks are teachers, and nuns are disciples; fourth, monks transmit and uphold the Dharma treasury, so the twenty-five persons were all monks, whereas nuns could not; fifth, monks could compile the two treasuries, Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, whereas nuns could not; sixth, monks dwelt together with the Buddha, whereas nuns dwelt separately from the Buddha; seventh, the assembly of monks was numerous, and the assembly of nuns was few.
