From "If there are kinds of sentient beings" onward, third, it versifies the assembly receiving the teaching in the prose. The text comprises three parts: first, it explains obtaining benefit by practicing in the past while the Buddha was in the world; second, it explains obtaining benefit by practicing after the past Buddha's parinirvāṇa; third, it jointly explains obtaining benefit by practicing in both periods. The gates of teaching do not exceed the two kinds—preaching the Dharma and manifesting supernatural powers; practice does not exceed the difference of the three times. The intention here is to encompass all the agents and subjects of transformation in the past. Above, the prose first explained that hearing the Dharma ultimately leads to attaining the knowledge of all aspects; here, these verses first explain that practicing ultimately leads everyone to Buddhahood. The first part refers to the practice of the six perfections. Because the six perfections are the root of attaining Buddhahood, they are spoken of first. "Cultivating meritorious virtues in various ways" refers to the practices of the four vehicles.
