From 'having heard from the Buddha' onward is the second part, clarifying the Dharma that was heard, which is the condition for attaining understanding. There are two conditions for attaining understanding: first, taking the Dharma as the condition; second, taking a person as the condition, namely the conferment of prophecy on Śāriputra. Taking the Dharma as the condition generates joy in the present; taking a person as the condition brings joy from anticipating the attainment of prophecy. From 'giving rise to a rare mind' onward is the third, inner joy, which is precisely the assimilation of understanding. From 'immediately arose from their seats' onward is the fourth, clarifying the outward rendering of respect. Regarding 'baring the right shoulder': before rising, they were properly wearing their kāṣāyas; according to the Vinaya in foreign countries, one does not wear an armpit-covering garment or an asymmetrical upper garment, and wearing them incurs a duṣkṛta offense. Here, 'baring the right shoulder' means simply exposing the right shoulder, without any inner garment.
