Regarding the characteristics of unprecedented phenomena (adbhutadharma): this refers to the proclamation in the sūtras of all the shared and unshared virtues possessed by the buddhas and holy disciples among the eight classes of beings, as well as other supreme, extraordinary, and astonishing phenomena; these are unprecedented phenomena. In the Nirvāṇa-sūtra, only deeds of the Buddha are spoken of, such as the Buddha walking seven steps immediately upon birth, emitting a great radiance that illuminated the ten directions everywhere, the monkey offering honey, the white dog listening to the Dharma, and the demon transforming into a blue ox walking among earthenware bowls causing them to touch each other without any damage. However, whenever extraordinary events of disciples and non-disciples are spoken of, they are all called unprecedented phenomena.
