Now, when we say "Avalokiteśvara," the correct pronunciation in the Western Lands is Ayapoloujidi输 [Avalokiteśvara], which here means "Observing the Sounds of the World." Subject and object are perfectly interfused, existence and non-existence are both unimpeded; illuminating to the utmost the true nature, he discerns its roots and branches; hence he is called "Observing." "Sounds of the World" refers to the object observed: the myriad images are in flux, separated and distinct, their kinds of voices chanting diversely; all receive freedom from suffering, and the Bodhisattva's vast benevolence universally saves them at once, causing them all to be liberated; hence he is called "Avalokiteśvara." This raises both object and wisdom, and designates both subject and object together. "Sūtra" (jing) means "path" or "warp"; its textual principles express and unfold, weaving together the mind of the practitioner; hence it is called "sūtra." As for "Universal Gate" (pumen): "universal" has the meaning of all-pervading; "gate" means that which can provide passage; by means of the single true mark, ten universal gates are opened, unimpeded anywhere; hence it is called "Universal Gate." "Chapter" (pin) means a category: meanings and categories follow one another, hence it is called a "chapter."
