大部既有五章明義，今品例為此釋。五意者：一釋名、二出體、三明宗、四辯用、五教相。

Since the major treatise [the Lotus Sūtra commentary] has five chapters explaining the meaning, the present chapter is likewise interpreted in this way. The five points are: first, explaining the name; second, revealing the essence; third, clarifying the central theme; fourth, discerning the function; and fifth, characteristics of the teaching.
