【Anapaboloujidishu】(Avalokiteśvara) The Wenju calls it Boloujidishui. The Biexing xuan [says]: "This means Guanshiyin (Perceiver of the World's Sounds). Subject and object are fully integrated, existence and non-existence are both unimpeded; illuminating to the utmost the true nature, investigating its root and branch, it is therefore called 'Observing' (guan). 'The world's sounds' (shiyin) are the realm that is observed. The myriad phenomena flow and change, separated and distinct; their various sounds and different cries all receive release from suffering; the bodhisattva's vast compassion universally saves them at once, causing all to attain liberation; hence he is called Guanshiyin." Master Ying says: "Avalokiteśvara: here translated as Guanshi zizai (Perceiver of the World at Ease). In the texts of sūtras brought from the Snowy Mountains onward, it says savara, which is translated as 'sound' (yin). The Wuliang qingjing pingdengjue jing calls it Alougen, translated here as Guangshiyin (Illuminator of the World's Sounds)." The Xiyu ji says: "Avalokiteśvara, in the language of the Tang is Guanzizai (Contemplating at Ease). Combining the characters into a continuous sound, the Sanskrit is as above. Dividing into the broad sounds: avalokita is translated as 'observing' (guan); īśvara is translated as 'at ease' (zizai). The older translations as Guangshiyin or Shizizai are both erroneous." Tripiṭaka Master Tang Xuanzang said: "Observing existence, he does not abide in existence; observing emptiness, he does not abide in emptiness. Hearing names, he is not confused by names; seeing forms, he is not drowned in forms. The mind cannot be stirred, realms cannot follow; stirring and following do not disturb his truth: this may truly be called unhindered wisdom."
