Tenth, universal maturing of sentient beings: for example, the benefit brought by fireflies, lamps, candles, stars, and the moon is rather slight; when the sunlight illuminates the world, it universally makes all plants, trees, and thickets grow, bringing flowers and fruits to maturity. Non-Buddhists are like fireflies, the two vehicles are like lamps and candles, the shared teaching is like the stars, and the separate teaching is like the moon; the meaning of maturing [in them] is restricted. Now the sage of the perfect teaching, with benevolence and wisdom, enriches and nourishes, providing both covert and overt benefits without measure. The *Avataṃsaka* states, 'A bodhisattva does not arouse bodhicitta for the sake of one sentient being, one land, or the sentient beings of one direction, but arouses the mind for the sake of sentient beings in ineffable-ineffable Buddha-lands of dust-mote realms.' Establishing benefits and equally moistening all at once, just like a great rain falling upon all four quarters together; hence it is called the universal maturing of sentient beings. How could the meaning of the universal gate have measure or boundary? How could it ever be exhausted? Those of the company of Vimalakīrti could not uphold it. Now this universal gate of Avalokiteśvara directly corresponds to the three titles: Avalokita (contemplation) is awakening, and awakening is called Buddha; loka-svara (world's sounds) is the object, and the object is tathatā; the universal gate is correct, universal knowledge. These three meanings can never be exhausted; if one sees their import, one can expound them at will.
