The treatise states: Within the main exposition, there are broadly two parts: the specific clarification of contemplative practice has finished above, and from here below is the second, generally resolving all doubts. As to the text, there are four: first, requesting; second, permitting; third, resolving; fourth, comprehending. This question and answer constitute the request and permission. The one able to make this request is named Kṣitigarbha because this person has already attained identical-body great compassion, generating and growing the wholesome roots of all sentient beings, just as the great earth generates all grasses and trees; and by means of dhāraṇī, he retains all merits, bestowing them on all beings inexhaustibly, just as a great treasure-store contains inexhaustible rare jewels. By these two meanings he is named Kṣitigarbha. Now, in this chapter, he resolves all doubts and misgivings, generates all faith and understanding, and brings forth the jewels of resolution to bestow upon the assembly seeking the Dharma. The meaning corresponds to his name, so he is able to make the request.
