The Commentary says: From here down is the second part, explaining them separately. In the first there are two parts: first faith, then understanding. First, in clarifying faith, it means having faith that there are three kinds of Buddha-nature. As for "One has faith that the seed of true thusness within this body," one has faith in the true thusness of Buddha-nature abiding in its own nature, which is precisely the seed of the ultimate empty reality, namely the seed of the middle way of anuttarā samyaksambodhi. The intrinsically pure mind is fundamentally so by nature; hence it is called true thusness. It serves as the direct cause for the fruition of the three bodies; hence it is called a seed. Before abiding in the generation of the mind, it is called abiding in its own nature. Not yet freed from all obstacles, it is obscured by delusion. As for "abandoning the deluded mind," this is faith in the emerging Buddha-nature: from the stage of the ten faiths up to equal awakening, gradually emerging from the obstacles of faithlessness, ignorance, and so on, by progressively abandoning the coarse deluded mind of conceptual distinction. As for "the pure mind is clean and white," this is faith in the attained Buddha-nature: reaching after the path and being free from all defilements, the intrinsically pure mind manifests clean and white. The word "faith" in the upper line governs the lower two lines as well. As for "knows all sensory realms to be conceptual distinctions of mental speech," having had faith in the three kinds of Buddha-nature, one also knows the principle of mere-consciousness; therefore one knows that all sensory realms grasped by the mind are produced solely by conceptual distinctions of mental speech, and if separated from conceptual distinction, they do not exist at all.
