Sixth, universal and restricted: the single fruit of setting forth is restricted in text to the first bhūmi but universal in meaning to the ten bhūmis; the remaining three fruits are restricted in meaning to the first bhūmi but universal in text to the ten bhūmis. How is it known that the meaning of setting forth is universal? Explanation: because as the practice on subsequent bhūmis gradually increases, understanding also becomes clear. If so, why are understanding and practice not equal? Explanation: understanding can be grasped in advance, but practice cannot be cultivated in advance; thus they are not alike. Both being grasped in advance, why is it only on the first bhūmi? Explanation: because it is the initial beginning; furthermore, the path of seeing can be seen in advance. The three fruits being universal in text, why are they restricted in meaning? Explanation: because they are present on each bhūmi, their text is universal; each specifically belongs to its own bhūmi, and therefore they are restricted in meaning.
