First, the eight directions among them pertain only to this world, not to other realms. Within this world, they pertain only to this Jambudvīpa, not to the other continents. First, Mount Xianrenqi ("Hermit Arising") should be Mount Penglai in the Eastern Sea and the like. Second, Mount Louge ("Tower") should be the place where the sea captain Zizai lives next to Tower City on the southern coast mentioned below, and the like. Also, checking the Sanskrit text, it should be named Mount Superior Peak. Third, Mount Jingangyan ("Vajra Flame") should be on the coast of the Western Sea and the like. Fourth, Mount Xiangju ("Fragrance Gathering") should be at the king of Gandhamādana mountains in the north; this is because many bodhisattvas dwell within that mountain. Fifth, Mount Qingliang is Mount Wutai in Daizhou; currently within it there is the ancient Qingliang Monastery, named so because snow accumulates in both winter and summer. Concerning this mountain and the spiritual responses of Mañjuśrī, there is a record in three fascicles, fully as related there. Sixth, Mount Zhijian'gu ("Firm Branch"): checking the Sanskrit text, it properly says Caitya Mountain, translated here as "Return to the Ancestor," which is of the caitya (stūpa) class; it should be right at the southern seaside of this country. Seventh, Mount Shutiguangming: this should be the abode of Avalokiteśvara mentioned below, adjoining Mount Guangming; the Sanskrit name is *Jyotis*, translated here as "Illuminating." Eighth, Mount Xiangfeng ("Fragrant Wind") should be on the western side of Gandhamādana, because there is a wind cave. That these eight are all in mountains indicates that dwelling in mountains is quiet and secluded, a place where the Way grows, and therefore where the worthy and noble dwell.
