4. Cause and effect has three aspects: 1. Fruit corresponding to one's portion, namely great wealth and so forth (and so on). 2. Fruit of the stages, namely the cause prior to the bhūmis and the fruit above the bhūmis (and so on). 3. Attaining the fruit of Buddhahood: the second fascicle of the Foxing lun says, 'Renunciation is of two kinds: first, because in the past one renounced material things to give to others, now one diminishes greed and craving; second, because in the past one renounced the Dharma to give to people, now one lightens and destroys ignorance.' Due to this renunciation, greed, craving, and ignorance all become somewhat lighter and thinner, and by this cause and condition one attains the fruit of liberation. Furthermore, accomplishing the great mass of virtues of the fruit of Buddhahood, etc., is as explained in the 'Chapter on the Worthy Leader'.
