On the Commentary's "Ninth, complete fusion without obstruction," etc.: the text of the Commentary also has two parts: first, directly explaining this gate; second, from "These above" onward, concluding where the preceding three gates derive from. In the former, as for "is also identical to the preceding," it is identical to the preceding gate of different essences, which is the preceding sixth gate. If one examines the preceding sixth, its meaning is distinct; it is only that "same essence" differs from the preceding. Fearing that someone might not understand, I shall now explain it fully. In the dharma of conditioned arising within the same essence, only when potency and function interpenetrate and essence as a whole fuses together is conditioned arising accomplished. Therefore, complete fusion also has six propositions: (1) Because essence is never without function, raising the essence in its entirety is completely function; thus there is only mutual entrance within the same essence, with no meaning of mutual identity. (2) Because function is never without essence, raising the function in its entirety is completely essence; thus there is only mutual identity within the same essence, with no meaning of mutual entrance. (3) Function returning to essence does not obstruct function, and essence embodying function in its entirety does not lose essence; thus, without obstruction, both are preserved—being both identical and entering, they freely appear together. (4) Essence embodying function in its entirety has its essence eliminated, and function embodying essence in its entirety has its function dissolved; being neither identical nor entering, they are completely fused into one flavor. (5) Combining the preceding four propositions, within the identical same essence, conditioned arising unobstructed both coexist. (6) Eliminating the preceding five propositions, absolute and beyond words, they are tacitly identical with the ocean of nature. Hence it says: "It should be understood following the preceding."
