On the Commentary's "Tenth, the consummation of sameness and difference," etc.: the text of the Commentary has three parts: this single phrase above indicates the title; next, from "Meaning that by taking the preceding" onward, explains individually; finally, from "This tenth" onward, concludes what it belongs to and adduces citations for proof. Now for the first: the previous four gates of different essences, four gates of same essence, and the third, "both preserving sameness and difference," none go beyond sameness and difference. Now, combining them into one place without being biased toward one gate, it is called consummation. In the second part, explaining individually, it is complete with the ten profundities. Now for the first: from "taking the preceding nine" up to "complete" is precisely the gate of simultaneous completeness and correspondence. As for "manifold doctrinal gates," there are root and branch, sameness and difference, entrance and identity, the four propositions and the six propositions, and so on. Combining the preceding nine gates constitutes the gate of simultaneity. Because it is the universal, if any single meaning is missing, conditioned arising is not accomplished. Therefore, for the nine gates below, each first explains the meaning, and then concludes what it belongs to.
