Regarding the Commentary: "Speaking of 'observing the directions' refers to observing the four truths," this is what is stated in fascicle thirty-six, the "Kāśyapa Chapter" of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]: "Just as by the banks of the Ganges there are seven kinds of sentient beings: 1. those who sink; 2. those who, having sunk, emerge again, and having emerged, sink again; 3. those who, having sunk, come out and do not sink again; 4. those who, having emerged, observe the directions; 5. those who, having observed the directions, depart; 6. those who depart and abide in the shallows; 7. those who reach the other shore." There is extensive correlating text, but here only the single meaning of the fourth, observing the directions, is taken. The sūtra says: "This is called the fourth, universally observing the four directions; the four directions are none other than the four truths." The explanation says: being able to observe the four truths is precisely the truth of the path; therefore the path is named observing the directions.
