Section 9. Regarding the commentary's phrase “The first line is practice without remainder”: here there are four kinds of practice. First is practice without remainder, because all are cultivated. The next line has two practices: first, prolonged practice; second, uninterrupted practice. Ceasing neither day nor night is prolonged; diligent without negligence is uninterrupted. Crossing over what is difficult to cross is vigorous practice. This verse is general, generally showing the characteristics of delivering beings. “A lion's roar is called definitive exposition”: this refers to chapter 27 of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, the “Chapter on the Lion's Roar,” below which preaching the Dharma to cross over various categories [of beings] is outlined as having six kinds, which also subsumes the verses below across four sections. The first verse expounds the Buddha-nature to cross over icchantikas. The icchantika's Buddha-nature is obscured by avidyā; mistaking the real and giving rise to delusion, they are like falling into a great river. Second, there is one verse on non-self to convert outsiders. Third, there are six verses all expounding the suffering of desires to deliver Māra Pāpīyān. Since Pāpīyān is the chief, all categories are subsumed. Fourth, there is one verse on delivering the triyāna: śrāvakas' dharma-attachment fails to understand the emptiness of nature; pratyekabuddhas lack compassion and do not follow beings into the six paths. Compassion and wisdom flowing together to universally teach all living beings is converting bodhisattvas.
