38.15

疏「自解亦三」者，次第對上，謂一由內性成故，不隨他人；二了唯心故，不心外取法；三由了性故如，性外一法亦無。疏「非但多聞於義不了」者，即《涅槃經》意。〈高貴德王品〉云「寧願少聞，多解義理；不願多聞，於義不了。」涅槃近因，〈問明〉已引。

Commentary: 'Self-understanding also has three': in sequence corresponding to the above, meaning: 1. because it is accomplished through inner nature, one does not follow others; 2. because of comprehending mind-only, one does not grasp phenomena outside the mind; 3. because of comprehending the nature as thusness, not a single phenomenon exists outside the nature. Commentary: 'Not only having heard much without understanding the meaning': this is the intent of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra. The 'Noble King Bodhisattva Chapter' says: 'Better to hear little and understand the meaning and principles deeply, than to hear much without understanding the meaning.' The proximate cause of nirvāṇa has already been cited in the 'Inquiry and Clarification' [chapter].
