Regarding the commentary's phrase “Abiding in pure mindfulness is the joy of the present life” and so forth: in the *Yogācārabhūmi*, the joys of the two lives are of nine kinds: first, dhyāna of subduing sentient beings through supernormal transformations; second, dhyāna of subduing sentient beings through thought-reading transformations; third, dhyāna of subduing sentient beings through pedagogical transformations; fourth, dhyāna of displaying the evil destinies to evil-doers; fifth, dhyāna capable of bestowing eloquence upon those who have lost eloquence; sixth, dhyāna capable of bestowing correct mindfulness upon those who have lost mindfulness; seventh, dhyāna of composing and establishing unperverted treatises, exquisite praises, and mātṛkās, capable of causing the true Dharma to abide long in the world; eighth, dhyāna capable of performing various arts, calculations, measurements, figures, seals, couches, seats, and other activities among worldly crafts and occupations, capable of bringing about benefits to assist sentient beings; ninth, dhyāna of emitting great light to touch and shine upon sentient beings to be transformed who are born in evil destinies, in order to temporarily halt their many sufferings. Here it merely refers generally to the meaning of the joys of the two lives.
