Regarding the Commentary's 'First, if the sixth ground is taken as mixed' onward: discussing defilement and purity in general, there are four gates: 1. Saying that the stages of external ordinary beings are called purely defiled; from the good destinies onward up to the stage of resolute practice is called defiled and pure; from the first ground onward is called purely pure. 2. The good destinies are also defiled; from the lineage stage onward is defiled and pure; purely pure is the same as above. 3. Prior to the grounds is entirely defiled; from the first ground to the seventh ground is also called defiled and pure; from the eighth ground onward is called purely pure. 4. The meaning of defilement is as above; all ten grounds are defiled and pure, and only the Buddha is purely pure. The present case is the third gate. Regarding the Commentary's 'Thus this ground is called defiled and pure, because its practice is not defiled': this means that in terms of practice it is not defiled, but in terms of stage it is within defilement.
