Regarding the commentary's statement that "the first half clarifies the general pervading the particular": the pervader and the pervaded are not separate from the environment and the person, and both environment and person each have two aspects: first, the general; second, the particular. The complete body of the Buddha is the general of the person; a single hair pore, and so on, is the particular of the person. A single Buddha land is the general of the environment; a single fine dust mote, and so on, is the particular of the environment. Here, because the first half describes the Buddha pervading within a dust mote, it says that the general pervades within the particular. Regarding "essence and function are unobstructed": the upper line is essence, because there is no going or coming. The lower line is function, because it manifests in all lands. It is also the general pervading, for "general" means the body pervading the lands. The rest may be reflected upon.
