Regarding the commentary's statement "if one does not enter the ocean, how can one obtain jewels": this is from the chapter "Contemplating the Buddha Path" in the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa: "Just as one who does not descend into the great ocean cannot obtain the priceless jewel, so too, one who does not enter the great ocean of afflictions cannot obtain the jewel of omniscient knowledge."
