Regarding the Commentary's "Therefore the Yingluo jing says that one in the stage of aspiration is this person," etc., it corroborates the meaning of aspiration running through from the beginning. Fascicle 2 of that sūtra, at the beginning of the Chapter on Explaining the Sūtra's Meaning, says: "O son of the Buddha! One in the stage of aspiration is a person who, beginning as a fully bound ordinary person, not yet recognizing the Three Jewels and the noble ones, not yet recognizing wholesome and unwholesome causes and fruits, completely without recognition, understanding, or knowledge—O son of the Buddha, beginning from this lack of knowledge, upon encountering a Buddha or bodhisattva in the ordinary stage, within the teaching raises a single thought of faith, and thereupon generates the bodhisattva mind. At that time, before faith, this person is named a 'bodhisattva of the mark of faith', also named a 'nominal bodhisattva', and also named a 'bodhisattva in name only'. That person briefly practices the ten minds: namely, the mind of faith, the mind of vigor, the mind of mindfulness, the mind of samādhi, the mind of wisdom, the mind of precepts, the mind of pariṇāmanā, the mind of protecting the Dharma, the mind of relinquishment, and the mind of vows." It also says: "O son of the Buddha! One in the stage of aspiration is a person of good roots belonging to the portion of higher advancement; if for one kalpa, two kalpas, or even in the presence of as many Buddhas as one or two Gaṅgās, they practice the ten minds of faith, having faith in the permanent abiding of the Three Jewels," and so forth.
