Regarding the commentary's phrase "pitying their drowning and inversion, how could one harbor hatred?": based on the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*, it says: "Rāhula was beaten by non-Buddhists and wept. Someone asked the reason. He answered, 'My suffering is only for a short time; what can be done about their long suffering?'" This is pitying their drowning. And saying "inversion" means also pitying their cause, which merely stems from inversion. Just as when Bodhisattva Āryadeva had his belly cut open by a non-Buddhist and his disciples wished to pursue [the assailant], the Bodhisattva extensively expounded the emptiness of dharmas and admonished the disciples, saying: "These people are inverted and falsely see a self and others, hence giving rise to this evil. They do not understand that the nature is empty and has nothing real," and so forth.
