On the commentary’s “Second, Kakuda…” and so forth: this is the name; his clan was Kātyāyana. Regarding “asserting Īśvara”: in fascicle 17 of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], he was served as a master by Minister Jide (Śrīgupta). He said to King Ajātaśatru: “As the King said, in the world there is no good physician to cure evil karma. Now there is a great master named Kakuda Kātyāyana, who has all knowledge and vision. […] and taught his disciples such a doctrine: ‘If a person slaughters all sentient beings without shame in his heart, he will never fall into evil [destinies], just as space does not receive dust or water. One who has shame falls into hell, just as great water moistens the earth. All sentient beings are entirely made by Īśvara: when Īśvara is pleased, sentient beings have peace and joy; when Īśvara is angry, sentient beings have suffering and distress. Whether sins or merits, all are made by Īśvara; how can one say that human beings possess sin or merit? For example, a craftsman makes a mechanical wooden man that walks, stands, sits, and lies down, only unable to speak. Sentient beings are also like this. Īśvara is like the craftsman. The wooden man is like the bodies of sentient beings. When it is made like this, who can have sin? Such a great master now resides nearby in the city of Rājagṛha. You need only go to him quickly; if you can see him, your numerous sins will be eradicated.’” The King then replied: “If there truly is such a person who can eradicate my sins, I will take refuge [in him].”
