Where the commentary says, 'Third, relying on this sūtra,' and so forth, this is the third explanation, which is the meaning of there being three lifetimes in the Mahāyāna. That Vijñaptimātra judged the three [lifetimes] to belong to the Hīnayāna particularly contradicts the ultimate teaching. As for 'in order to negate that the former seven are definitely of the same lifetime,' this refers to the Vijñaptimātra above. As for 'in order to negate that tṛṣṇā and so forth are merely moisteners,' that which is negated is also the intent of the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi. Here it is clarified that tṛṣṇā and so forth are identical with avidyā and saṃskāra, possessing both initiating and moistening, and so forth.
