From the commentary's "Nor is it that the mind is in samādhi" onward: third, warding off counter-arguments and re-discriminating. Fearing they might argue, "Although mental concepts are extinguished, preparatory practices prior to samādhi cause the body to give rise to function," it now discriminates this, [showing] it is not our school's view either. Because while the mind is directly in samādhi it cannot give rise [to function], this wards off Faxiang. Next, saying "Nor is it solely clarifying that both samādhi and distraction are severed": this wards off the Chan school. Cessation and contemplation are both obliterated, neither in samādhi nor distracted; this is explained suddenly in terms of principle, and is also the purport of the Sudden Teaching, hence it is not the school of this sūtra. Only from "However, phenomena and principle" onward does it reveal the correct doctrine: by attuning to the unimpeded principle, one attains ease in both samādhi and distraction. From "The seventh ground above" onward, it cites two sūtras as proof, all as explained previously.
