18.30

第九覺林菩薩者，是善法行，主力波羅蜜。如善財此位善知識號不動優婆夷，是第九法師位。何故為女身？為明處法師位時，貞潔慈悲柔軟，以女表之。此女發心已經閻浮提微塵劫，自發心來，心無一念五欲之想。明貞潔堅固慈悲柔軟，是法師之德也。是故此菩薩號曰覺林，主力波羅蜜。覺林菩薩，是行行之人。淨慧世界，是修行之法。最上眼佛，是所修行之果，為智慧淨故，佛號最上眼。

Ninth, as for the Bodhisattva Bodhivana (Forest of Awakening): this is the practice of wholesome dharmas, governing bala-pāramitā. Just as Sudhana's kalyāṇamitra in this stage is designated the upāsikā Acalā, this is the ninth stage of a Dharma master. Why is it a female body? It is to explain that when dwelling in the stage of a Dharma master, one is chaste, pure, compassionate, and gentle, which is represented by a woman. Since this woman first gave rise to the aspiration [for bodhi], kalpas as numerous as dust motes in Jambudvīpa have passed, and since giving rise to that aspiration, her mind has not had a single thought of desire for the five sensual pleasures. This explains that being chaste, firm, compassionate, and gentle are the virtues of a Dharma master. Therefore this bodhisattva is designated Bodhivana, governing bala-pāramitā. Bodhisattva Bodhivana is the person who performs the practices. The world of Pure Wisdom is the Dharma cultivated. The Buddha Utmost Eye is the fruit of what is cultivated; because wisdom is pure, the Buddha is designated Utmost Eye.
