That a thousand buddhas are followed by ten thousand buddhas like this illustrates the characteristics of progressive cultivation. For instance, in the 'Chapter on the Ten Practices', Bodhisattva Guṇavana (Gongdelin) entered the Bodhisattva Good Reflection Samādhi. Having entered this samādhi, beyond worlds as numerous as the dust motes in ten thousand buddha-lands in each of the ten directions, there were buddhas as numerous as the dust motes in ten thousand buddha-lands, all sharing the same single name, called Guṇavana, who manifested before him, praising and comforting Guṇavana. This is just as in the previous stage: because cause and effect are identical, the buddhas' names are identical to the bodhisattva's name, once again taking the bodhisattva as the cause and the buddhas as the fruition's virtue; because the two essences are identical, they therefore share the same name. The countries from which the ten -vana (-lin) bodhisattvas originally came are all named Mati ('Wisdom'). The ten -vana bodhisattvas, such as Bodhisattva Guṇavana, each came with bodhisattvas as numerous as the dust motes in a buddha-land, all arriving from worlds beyond lands as numerous as the dust motes in a hundred thousand buddha-lands; their countries are named the Priyamati World, the Dhvajamati World, and the Ratnamati World. In these ten -mati worlds, the buddhas they originally served are the Buddha Nityasthitanetra, the Buddha Viśiṣṭanetra, and the Buddha Apratiṣṭhitanetra—these ten -netra buddhas.
