"World-Honoured One, the tathāgatagarbha..." introduces Chapter Thirteen, "The Intrinsic Purity Hidden and Veiled." It is explained through three gates: First, the gate of contextual intention. As for why this chapter appears: above, the chapter "Perverted and Real" explained that stating there is saṃsāra dependent on the tathāgatagarbha is real discourse; that the three kinds of sentient beings do not state that there is saṃsāra dependent on the tathāgatagarbha is perversion. Next, it discusses the meaning of defilement and purity of what depends and what is depended upon. Saṃsāra, which depends, is defiled; the garbha, which is depended upon, is pure. Purity should not have defilement, and defilement should not have purity; this matter is difficult to fathom, known only to the Buddha. Wishing now to discuss this meaning, this chapter appears. Furthermore, in the earlier "Chapter on the Tathāgatagarbha" it merely said that not being separate from the kleśagarbha is the tathāgatagarbha, but it was not yet known how it is not separate. Here it directly clarifies that the tathāgatagarbha being defiled by adventitious defilements is called 'not being separate'. Therefore, this chapter appears. Furthermore, it follows closely from the chapter "Perversion". Doubters ask: Sentient beings of the three kinds possess the tathāgatagarbha; for what cause and condition is it not their realm? To resolve this doubt, it states that although the three kinds of sentient beings all possess the garbha, because it is covered by defilements, it is not their realm. Furthermore, above in "Perverted and Real," it explained what the lower faculties cannot reach; here, intrinsic purity is difficult to know and is the Buddha's realm, revealing that only the highest wisdom can know it; hence it is explained next. Furthermore, above it explained the tathāgatagarbha under one name and one meaning; this chapter explains it under multiple names and multiple meanings. The reason for this is that this chapter explains the tathāgatagarbha to the ultimate extent; hence it discriminates broadly here. Moreover, it discusses the fundamental great matter of the Buddha-Dharma: the great matter is the buddhadhātu, and the buddhadhātu is the prakṛtiprabhāsvara-citta. This matter must be discussed and distinguished; hence this chapter appears.
