The sūtra says: "If, when I attain Buddhahood..." up to "may I not attain complete enlightenment." The commentary states: This last is the vow of non-retrogression through one's own power. Some say that the first, second, and third tolerances of dharmas are, among the five tolerances of the Benevolent Kings Prajñā, in their respective order the tolerance of subduing, the tolerance of faith, and the tolerance of conformity. This is likely not so. The tolerance of faith corresponds to the first, second, and third grounds (bhūmi), and the tolerance of conformity corresponds to the fourth, fifth, and sixth grounds; how could one attain these two tolerances merely by hearing that Buddha's name? If one says that hearing the name brings them gradually, then it should also say that one obtains all five tolerances. Here, it is the three levels of the tolerance of subduing that are named the three dharmas, for the Yogācārabhūmi also states that on the stage of practice with resolute belief (adhimukticaryā-bhūmi) there are three tolerances: lower, middle, and upper grades.
