On the sūtra passage from "For this reason Amitāyus" to "the Buddha of Light Surpassing the Sun and Moon": The Commentary states: This second part concludes the praise and reveals its superiority. Some say: it is immeasurable because of its length, boundless because of its breadth, unhindered because of its freedom, unmatched because none other can rival it, the king of flames because it excels other lights, pure because it is free of defilement, joyful because seeing it delights the mind, wisdom because it illuminates objects well, uninterrupted because it illuminates things ceaselessly, inconceivable because it surpasses worldly thought, ineffable because it cuts off words and thoughts, and surpassing the sun and moon because it surpasses all worldly forms. Although there is this interpretation, it fails to distinguish the lights and is not thorough. Now, [we explain]: the Buddha's light is immeasurable because it cannot be calculated; it is boundless because there are no conditions it does not illuminate; it is unhindered because there is no person or phenomenon that can obstruct it; it is unmatched because it cannot be reached by any bodhisattva; it is the king of flames because its brilliance is unconstrained and nothing is superior to it; it is pure because it manifests from the Buddha's wholesome root of non-greed and also eliminates the greedy and turbid minds of sentient beings; it is joyful because it is born from the Buddha's wholesome root of non-anger and can eliminate the angry and sorrowful minds of sentient beings; it is wisdom because the light arises from the Buddha's mind of the wholesome root of non-delusion and further eliminates the minds of sentient beings associated with ignorance; it is uninterrupted because the Buddha's constant light eternally illuminates and benefits; it is inconceivable because the light cannot be fathomed by the two vehicles and the like; it is ineffable because the other vehicles and the like are incapable of expressing it; and it surpasses the sun and moon because it shines constantly day and night, unlike the radiance of the two luminaries in the Sahā world. In general, this is the adornment of the body, as the treatise says: "Marks, signs, and a fathom of light / His physical form surpasses all living beings."
