On the passage where the sūtra states, "May I become a buddha..." up to "all are liberated": The commentary states: The third is taking vows. There are two parts: first, the vow seeking what was praised, which is ten verses; second, requesting the Buddha to bear witness, which is three verses. The first also has two parts: first, directly seeking what was praised, which is the Buddha's dharmakāya; second, taking the occasion to pray for that on which it relies, which is the Buddha's pure land. The first also has three parts: this is seeking the fruit. Some say: "Equaling the holy Dharma King" seeks the Buddha's personal virtues, while "crossing beyond birth and death" and so on seeks the virtues of benefiting others. That is not so. Whenever one is called a buddha, one must possess both benefits. Now, "May I become a buddha equaling the holy Dharma King" is the vow for the virtues to be attained. "Crossing beyond birth and death, with none not liberated" is the vow for what is to be abandoned.
