On the passage where the sūtra states, "May I become a buddha..." up to "and without equal": The commentary states: This is, next, seeking a superior land by comparison. "Land" refers to the present world of Sukhāvatī. "Foremost" refers to its adornment with various marks. "Marvelous" refers to its being foremost in assembly. "Bodhi-site" refers to being foremost in seat. "Like nirvāṇa" refers to being foremost in bliss. In Sanskrit it is nirvāṇa, translated into Tang [Chinese] as perfect cessation. Calling it nihuan is an erroneous abbreviation. Because the bliss of that land is second only to nirvāṇa, it is used as a simile. "Without equal" means the land is foremost. Speaking generally of "foremost" is an appellation in contrast to what is inferior; otherwise, it would contradict the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, as explained previously.
