Regarding the passage from the sūtra where 'The bhikṣu said to the Buddha' up to 'fulfill and complete my vows', the commentary states: This is the third [part], where Dharmākara repeats his request. 'Vast' means expansive and great. That is, the noble practices on the [bodhisattva] bhūmis are broad and profound in meaning, and not within his own domain; therefore, he had to request it. Yet the Buddha only said, 'You yourself should know,' which refers to the practice prior to the bhūmis; hence there is no contradiction. Some say: 'Here, he only sought the practice for the Pure Land, while the cause for the [Buddha's] person is omitted.' This is incorrect. 'Tathāgata' and 'Pure Land' form a dvandva compound [here], for in proper sequence they refer to the practices of the [Buddha's] person and the land.
