On the passage from the sūtra beginning "You, in this [world]" to "not the slightest evil the size of a hair": the commentary states: This is the latter part, praising by contrast to induce cultivation. There are two parts: this first praises superiority in contrast to Amida's land to induce cultivation. The six perfections such as giving are benefits for oneself. Transforming others to establish goodness is the practice of benefiting others; this is 'active goodness'. An upright mind and the observance of precepts is 'restraining goodness'. Because this cultivation is difficult to accomplish, [cultivating goodness here] for a single day surpasses a hundred years of goodness in the Western land. Yet as for the praise stating that being born in that land enables one quickly to attain unsurpassed bodhi, that is because there they cultivate without intermission. Here the time spent cultivating goodness is short; thus there is no contradiction.
