Fourth, from 'The Tathāgata now' down to 'attaining the patience of the unborn' directly clarifies the marks of encouraging practice and obtaining benefit. This clarifies that the Tathāgata wished to reveal the expedient means of contemplation for the Queen, future beings, and others, fixing their contemplation on the West, abandoning and loathing Sahā, and eagerly desiring Sukhāvatī. The phrase 'by the Buddha's power' and so forth clarifies that the karmic obstacles of sentient beings make them blind before their very eyes; pointing to their palms they consider it distant, and another place separated by a bamboo strip exceeds a thousand leagues. How much more so beyond the lot of a pṛthagjana: peering with their minds into the realm of the Buddhas, unless aided invisibly by the sacred power, by what means could that land be seen? 'Like holding a clear mirror and seeing one's own face' and so forth clarifies that when the Queen, sentient beings, and others enter contemplation and settle their minds, concentrating their spirits without letting go, mind and object correspond, and all is fully manifested; when the object manifests, it is no different from seeing an object in a mirror. 'Attaining patience because the mind rejoices' clarifies that the pure radiance of the land of Amitābha Buddha suddenly manifests before their eyes—how could their leaping for joy be contained? Due to this joy, they immediately attain the patience of the unborn (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti), which is also called the patience of joy, the patience of awakening, or the patience of faith. This is a profound exposition and does not indicate the stage of attainment. Wishing to cause the Queen and others to yearn for this benefit, when they valiantly and single-mindedly visualize with their minds and see it, only then do they respond with the patience of awakening. This is mostly the patience within the ten faiths, not the patience of the stage of understanding and practice or above.
