"'When this visualization is accomplished, contemplate each detail with utmost clarity; whether closing your eyes or opening your eyes, do not let it disperse or be lost, constantly keeping this matter in mind except when eating. Visualizing in this way is called roughly seeing the land of Sukhāvatī.'" Contemplating each detail refers to the general and specific characteristics mentioned earlier. Excepting the time of eating allows for a temporary interval. Some, relying on an alternative edition, change it to "time of sleeping," but upon examining various ancient editions, they all read "time of eating." Furthermore, when an ordinary person is asleep, thought naturally ceases on its own; how could it wait for an exception? Some say that the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna each have their contemplation on eating, which is why it is excepted here. This applies only to monastic assemblies and is not a universal principle. I maintain that while other contemplation practices do not distinguish between times and places, this contemplation takes a sacred realm as its object, so it should rightfully be reverent and respectful. Giving rise to visualizations while confronting food runs contrary to the principle of showing respect. Therefore, the method for contemplating the image in the Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha states: "When the mental visualization is accomplished, at all times one constantly sees the Buddha image, except at the time of eating and the time of going to the toilet." This serves as clear evidence, so there is no need to alter the text. In the beginning mind of gradual visualization, the marks of samādhi are not yet achieved, so it says "roughly seeing," which means it is not yet clearly distinct. Second, proper attainment.
